CUSTODIAN CLOTHING ALLOWANCE 542.5

Wautoma Area School District
Approved 01/23/2006

The Wautoma Board of Education is establishing a uniform policy for its custodial staff, to help aid in their identification to visitors, spectators and parents, enhance school security and promote a professional image of the organization.
The general guidelines for the uniform policy are as follows:

1) Upon successful completion of the initial probationary period of employment, employees will be issued five (5) shirts during their first year, then two new shirts each year thereafter at the expense of the district beginning July 1, 2005.
2) Custodial employees are required to wear their uniform shirt during their hours of employment and are permitted to wear them to and from work. The shirts are the property of the district and are not to be worn other than during the times specified for work.
3) Employees that are issued uniform shirts under this policy are responsible for keeping their uniform shirts clean, repaired and laundered.
4) Uniform shirts will not be altered except to accommodate fit. Sleeves will not be removed nor will any patches, emblems, imprint button or designs be added without prior written approval.
5) Uniform shirts may be not worn during the performance of heavy labor at a work site, provided that their supervisor has given approval.
6) Old and unserviceable uniform shirts need to be turned in to the district office for disposal.
7) When an employee terminates or transfers into a position where a uniform is not required, the employee must return all uniform shirts to their immediate supervisor no later than the date of termination or reassignment. All returned items must be laundered and in good condition.
8) If an employee fails to return any uniform item, the cost of the unreturned item will be deducted from the employee’s final payment in accordance with the Fair Labor
Standards Act (FLSA).
9) Failure to comply with this policy through frequent uniform violations or absence due to failure to wear the uniform may result in administrative or disciplinary actions.

Additional uniform shirts may be issued at the District Administrator’s discretion.
